j2 ideas & events have been reappointed for the third year running as the Creative Director of Riverfire – the Opening event of Brisbane Riverfestival. Riverfire is Brisbane's biggest annual public celebration, attracting more than 500,000 people to inner City vantage points to view 30 minutes of spectacular fireworks choreographed to a contemporary music soundtrack broadcast on Triple M and simulcast on Channel Nine.
In 2005 the event was staged over a six kilometre footprint with fireworks fired from six barges, 10 inner City buildings and three bridges. More than 6,500 fireworks cues were programmed into a digital firing system to choreograph the fireworks effects to the music soundtrack with one hundredth of a second accuracy. Two F111 “dump and burns” were also incorporated making Riverfire the most challenging and complex event of it’s kind in Australia.
The role of j2 ideas & events was to creatively develop and direct an opening event for Riverfestival that met the vision of the festival while at the same time meeting the needs of the other key stakeholders. One of the many challenges was ensuring the live event translated well to a television product to cater to the ever increasing audience who view Riverfire from their lounge rooms. In 2005 just under 400,000 people tuned into the Channel Nine Riverfire telecast.
The unprecedented success of last years event can be largely attributed to several of j2’s recommendations including the appointment of Foti Fireworks, who are responsible for delivering the Sydney NYE fireworks, and the implementation of digital firing technology.
